MASSENA — Dennis A. Raymo Sr., 67, of River Lane in Massena, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Dec. 29, 2000.
Born in Massena on Jan. 16, 1933, he was the son of Allen J. and Florence (Farlinger) Raymo.
He attended local schools and graduated from Massena High School in 1950. Mr. Raymo enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1950 and was medically discharged in December 1951. He attended Canton Agricultural and Technical College from 1952 to 1954, earning an associate's degree in drafting and design.
He was a surveyor during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway Power Project in Massena, then worked at the General Motors Central Foundry plant as a tool and die maker from 1959 until his retirement on Feb. 1, 1988.
Mr. Raymo then worked as a surveyor for the Iroquois Pipeline Project in southern New York. He was also a fishing guide on the St. Lawrence River.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing and was a former member of the Massena AmVets Post, the American Legion in Massena, the Massena Rescue Squad and a member of the Massena Senior Citizens, St. Joseph's Church in Massena and a charter member of SeaComm Federal Credit Union.
He married Patricia A. McElwain on June 26, 1954, at the Church of the Visitation in Norfolk, with the Rev. Francis Conners officiating.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Massena; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny J. and Joni M. Raymo of Plattsburgh and Dennis A. Raymo Jr. of East Lansing, Mich.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Keely A. and Steven W. Dunshee of Potsdam and Denise A. Raymo of Moira; five grandchildren, Shena L. and Shane A. Raymo of Plattsburgh, Christopher M. Dunshee of Potsdam and Charles and Anna Raymo of Lansing, Mich.; two brothers, William Raymo of Sun City, Ariz., and Farley Raymo of Utica; and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Gayle Reid, and a grandson, Andrew Raymo, died before him.
Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 North Main Street in Massena. Cremation will be performed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, at noon at the funeral home followed by a luncheon for family and friends in the basement of St. Joseph’s Church.
