Mary Smith
F
Marriage* | Mary Smith married Thomas Dunshee, son of Thomas Dunshee and Elizabeth Moore; John Burbank discounts Mary Smith as a wife of Thomas, thereby reducing the number of Thomas's in Bristol and adding Robert as another son of Thomas & Hannah as follows: "Some have thought there was another Thomas Dunshee in Bristol based upon Hiram Carleton, Genealogical & Family History of the State of Vermont (1903) p. 274: "Among the early pioneers contributed to Bristol town by that fruitful mother of colonists called Connecticut, was Thomas Dunshee, who was of Scotch-Irish lineage. He settled on a farm and spent his whole life in the peaceful pursuits of agriculture. He married Mary Smith, who died in 1887 after becoming the mother of six children. Among these was Robert Dunshee who grew up on his father's farm in Bristol and learned the trade of a wheelwright..."
If Carleton is correct, Mary had to be born at least by the early 1780's to give birth to Robert in 1797-8 and she would have been over 100 when she died in 1887. Because Munsill's history doesn't mention a second Thomas or Mary, but does have the Thomas of Bristol married to Hannah Smith, it is speculated that Carleton was misinformed. No gravestones or vital records for this second Thomas or Mary have been discovered. The Thomas3 Dunshee (Thomas2,1), born around 1758 Londonderry NH, and who died 29 Nov 1846 Bristol VT at age 88, married to Hannah, daughter of John & Mary (Harkness) SMITH, born around 1762 and died 16 Feb 1821 at age 59, quite possibly is the Thomas that Carleton has in mind. If so, Robert, below, would be the sixth child in that family which agrees with Carleton's statement that Mary had six children by Thomas. If that were really her name, we ought to be able to locate more of those children than simply Robert. The only other problem with merging the two men named Thomas as a single person is the location given for their birth. Carleton says CT but at that point, perhaps he was misinformed also. The fact that Hannah's mother's name was Mary Smith supports the speculation that Carleton confused her name with that of Hannah. Until proven otherwise, this document will tentatively merge the two Thomas men into one.
Thomas was on the 1790 census of Bristol VT, but Hannah was evidently remained or returned to NH when were born.1,2 |
